WordPress and WordPressMU to merge

This is good news, altough I don’t know when the merge will be ready, it may be interesting to see if the next merge is with BuddyPress.

in an announcement at WordCamp San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress, he announced that the WordPress version (people use) and the version that many professional companies and larger sites use (MU, Multiple-User) will be merging. As Matt is celebrating the 6th anniversary of the open source blogging software.

It appears as though many details surrounding the conversion profess are unclear. Whether you would have to do a manual conversion (replacing some files) or if this would be completely built-in is up in the air. What we do know is that WordPress as we know it is becoming more of a complete content management system than ever before.

BuddyPress - Transform WordPress MU into a Social Network Platform

I had thought about it and it was kind of a dream, but today a person I follow on my Moodle twitter account posted this and I am excited to explore the potential, so, take a look.

Wordpress MU is what the guys at Amplify used, pretty cool!

An Overview

BuddyPress will extend WordPress MU and bring social networking features to a new or existing installation.

BuddyPress is a suite of WordPress plugins and themes, each adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you’d expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact.

All BuddyPress plugins can be themed to match your own style, in just the same way as a WordPress blog. The BuddyPress plugins are bundled with a default theme to get you going out of the box.

As all BuddyPress plugins are independant, they can be used in two different ways. All of the plugins could be used to create a complete social network from scratch, or you could use specific plugins to add desirable features to your existing blog network.

Blog Tracking

Blogs Screen

Allowing multiple blogs and multiple users per blog is a key feature to WordPress MU. BuddyPress preserves this functionality.
